Federal Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program
This federal program provides loan forgiveness to registered nurses in exchange for two years of service at a critical shortage facility. RNs are eligible to have up to 60% of their qualifying federal student loan balance forgiven. Recipients may also be eligible to have another 25% of their balance forgiven for working a third year at such a facility. Priority is given to applicants whose qualified nursing education loans are 40% or more of their annual salaries.
Critical shortage facilities include:
- Disproportionate share hospitals.
- Nursing homes.
- Federally designated community health centers.
- Federally designated migrant health centers.
- State or local public health departments.
- Rural health clinics.
- Indian health service centers.
